Reno 911

Literally.

We decided to renovate our townhouse this summer. So, we have been going through minor reno hell the past two weeks...or is it two months? So far, we have managed to:

  • Put flooring in the basement. Yeah, painted concrete isn't the most hip flooring, so it had to go. We put flooring down in the 'finished' half of the basement. The giant laundry room/storage area is still a concrete jungle.
  • Rip out all the flooring on the main level and put in laminate. We previously had ceramic tile in the kitchen, bathroom, and entryway, and very frightening carpet in the living room. It had seen much better days. The tile was the worst. When the guys pulled up the bathroom tile, the subfloor came with it. Apparently, it had rotted through. Fantastic! Was sorry I had to miss that - I was at a meeting out of town. The tile was also glued to the floor to a disturbing degree. Just removing the tile took a day and a half. Eek!
  • Discover during the floor removal that a)the baseboards were firmly attached to the walls and paint came with them when they were removed and b)that these brilliant people really could not paint worth crap. My favorite moment was moving the stove knowing already that, yes, they painted AROUND it. There was a stove shaped white patch on the wall. I knew that before, but I think I had repressed it. So, we went out and bought paint to repaint the main floor as well.
  • Repaint. Our main floor is no longer mauve brown. You know the colour of the metal on school desks? That icky pale brown? That colour. They are now a cream white with one green wall just so I don't get bored.
  • Buy new furniture. Okay, not entirely. But the coffee table we had was cracked and the side table was 1970s chic. So, IKEA seemed like a good idea. We also got some new area rugs.
  • Refinish the basement stairs. I don't want to use the word hazard, but...yeah, okay, hazard. Anyway, they are now beautiful. I might not ever be able to move because I would have to leave the stairs. Here's hoping I don't go goth enough to start living under them. Though if you saw them, you might understand.

We are currently working on getting the house back together after ripping it apart. Will post reno pics soon! Cannot thank enough the friends and family who helped us out! Will probably have to buy kick ass holiday presents. Moms already suggested that a cruise for their anniversary would not go amiss...she also has decided to start charging $125 per hour for painting services. You can tell we all had fun, hey?
