Five Things (Tag You're It)

The goal of this post is to cheer people up. Everybody I talk to lately seems to be tired, depressed, busy, panicked...not good emotions. So, breathe. I'm tagging five friends to do this and, if you don't have a blog, feel free to comment in the comments section for this post.

Here's what you have to do: Name five things that make you insanely happy for absolutely no fathomable reason. Here's five of mine:

1. Rubber Boots
2. Rubber Band Balls
3. Pumpkins
4. Animated Mushrooms
5. Rocks

It makes no sense, but these things make me very happy whenever I come across them. So, here's who I'm calling out:

1. Library Lady (please smile, Library Lady!)
2. Librarychik
3. Bob
4. Spazzy
5. Violette

Have fun...and try to laugh out loud today!

Summer

With everything happening in my life lately, I've been lost in memories. Weekends at my Aunt and Uncle's farm; camping trips with friends and family; chasing thunderstorms across the prairie at night. My extended family, especially on my Dad's side, is really close. It's really made me think about the kind of family life I want to create for my own kids.

I'd really like to rent a cabin...in the woods or on a lake. Play cards and crib, scrabble, monopoly. Make lemonade and barbeque. Teach the kids how to fish, not that I really know how. Let them run wild with sand in their shorts and mismatched flip-flops. Make it a big group thing...have family and friends so that it's a big mob scene half the time and quiet peaceful moments the rest of it, you know? Not too many of our friends and fam have kids yet...I'm the first of the grandkids in my Dad's fam. So, it might take the kids awhile to get playmates, but half of our friends are big kids anyway.

These are the kind of things I look forward to. It's just how I grew up. I think I'll be sending an e-mail out in the next little while. Maybe see how many of my loved ones might be interested in kicking in to rent a cabin for a week next summer.

How about you guys? What do you look forward to in the summertime? What kind of things make you smile?

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear

J is working late tonight, so I popped this into the DVD player. This is the biggest craptacular cheesefest I have ever seen. So, naturally, I loved it.

The top three reasons to watch this movie:

1) Badly choreographed good girl vs bad girl action sequence set to intentionally lame 70s catfight theme music

2) One liners such as: Let's just think about this for a second, shall we? I am out of your league. I'm so out of your league, that if your league exploded, I wouldn't hear it for three days. So let us continue in a comfortable silence, shall we?

3) Bob Newhart kicking ass! It's better than Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore. I mean, he kicks all kinds of ass. It's hysterical.

Thanks for lending it to me, Bob. I needed a good laugh. :)

100 Years - Five for Fighting

I’m 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I’m just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are

I’m 22 for a moment
And she feels better than ever
And we’re on fire
Making our way back from mars

15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose
15 there’s never a wish better than this
When you've only got 100 years to live...

I’m 33 for a moment
I'm still the man but you see I’m a they
A kid on the way babe
A family on my mind

I’m 45 for a moment
The sea is high
And I’m heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life

15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose yourself
Within a morning star
15 I’m alright with you
15 there’s never a wish better than this
When you've only got a 100 years to live...

Half time goes by
Suddenly you’re wise
Another blink of an eye
67 is gone
The sun is getting high
We’re moving on...

I’m 99 for a moment
With time for just another moment
And I’m just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are

15 there's still time for you
22 I feel her too
33 you're on your way
Every Day's a new Day

ooh ooh hoo ooh hoo ooh,
ooh ooh hoo ooh hoo ooh,
ooh ooh hoo ooh ooh ooh ooh hoo hoo hoo ooooooooooooooh

15 there’s still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey 15 there’s never a wish better than this
When you've only got a 100 years to live...

This song played yesterday during a slide show of my uncle's life. It pretty much sums up how I feel right now, so I thought I'd share it with all of you. Life is short - celebrate it.

Good News

My Dad is coming home! Hurrah! He's out of the hospital, is doing just fine, and should be here tonight. My brother is in town for a wedding and he has taken over watching the dogs and housesitting at my parents. Also, Dar is at his Mom's house overnight, so I am one kid short at home here. What am I going to do with this free time and lack of stress?...Hey, is that pile of laundry starting to get up and walk around on its own? And, ew, what the heck is that in the kitchen? Oh right, housework...I keep forgetting about that. Anyway, things are starting to look up here. I'm off to take care of the mess that is my house.** TTYL!

**Thanks go to Super-Jake who has been taking care of the housework as best he can on top of his usual job so that I had time to take care of everything else this week. He also managed to get Monday off so he can come with me to my uncle's funeral. Yay Super-Jake who I couldn't have survived this week without!

I've Had Better Weeks...

So, a summary:

Monday: My Dad is rushed to Calgary Foothills when supposedly boring little medical problem escalates.

Also Monday: My uncle passes away from terminal cancer. I am the messenger between parents on cell phone in hospital and rest of grieving family. J is stuck working late and cannot rush right home for me, but does his best and gets home earlier than expected at least.

Tuesday: Spend day putting together computers - lots of computers since we just got new ones for library. Get a headache from all the fiddly little details that need to be set up on them all. Depressed mood does not help. Spend evening fielding questions from concerned family and family friends about Dad and Uncle. Learn that Dad will be in hospital for at least a week.

Wednesday: I get a phone call at 7am to find out that the interior motion detectors have gone off at my library. I meet the police there, but the building is secure. I go in at 8:30 for my regular shift and discover that we should have looked around more carefully - we missed the giant crack in the library ceiling that is rapidly dripping water and large pieces of the ceiling all over our IPAC computers (and set off the motion detectors). We lose two computers to water damage.

Later Wednesday: I call the radio to let them know that, due to repair and maintenance, the library will be closed until further notice. I explain that there is a large crack, water damage, and a small section of the roof has come down. I learn a life lesson when radio announces on the news that the library roof has collapsed. Spend rest of day and next day fielding phone calls from all over everywhere asking who was hurt, whether the collection was lost, etc. No, people, two computers, that's it.

Thursday: Library is still closed. Deal with cranky people who want to know when it will be open. Find out, thankfully, that repairs are going well and library can re-open tomorrow. Spend entire day troubleshooting setup problems on computers that were supposed to be quickly installed. Learn that Dad will be in the hospital probably through the weekend and make plans to try and get to Calgary to visit. I'm not going to blog about details of Dad's condition, but he is still there and likely to be for a few more days. He'll be fine, but it will take awhile.

The high points: reading to the seniors at the nursing home on Tuesday night. They were so sweet and cheerful. It made me feel so much better to chat and visit with them instead of miring myself in the gloom. Also, I get to go on my first big book buying expedition for the library tomorrow. Several hours in Chapters and A&B Sound, going on a giant library shopping spree. That should cheer me up.

Anyway, sorry no one has heard from me this week. It has been really draining. I'm off now to go to my rents' and feed the puppies and housesit for a bit.

Rain!

I see the weather forecast is announcing at least four days of rain for our area. And do you know why? Because it's rodeo weekend - that's why. Every year. Freak - one year it even snowed.

Edmonton was a blast. I felt heartsick the entire time I was there because I miss living there so much. I feel like I fit in my own skin there: everyone and everything is so open and eclectic. I had a great time visiting Tawnia, Liz and Kath (while they were up from Cal), and Janice. I'm sorry I missed the rest of you - next time I'll have to give more warning for my visits. It was a crazy rushed trip. I definitely need more time there. I love walking Whyte and cruising the tree-lined streets. Sigh. I need more trees and more cool funky shops down here.

Next stop: Calgary.
